TikTok Photo Mode Not Showing or Not Working: What to Check
By Piet PhamUpdated on 7 min read

TikTok calls a swipeable slideshow a photo post, and the TikTok slideshow guide covers how to make one, with size and text placement. When the Photo option is missing, or a set of photos comes out as a video, the cause is usually an old app version, missing photo access, the wrong starting point, the wrong device, or a tool that does not post photos. We found no TikTok help page for this exact problem, so this guide sticks to what TikTok's own pages say and marks the rest clearly. We read every TikTok page linked here on 2026-10-31.
Key Takeaways
- Update the TikTok app and check that it can access your photos. TikTok's troubleshooting page asks for both.
- Start from Add post, then Photo, then Upload. That is the photo path in TikTok's help.
- Post photo slideshows from the phone app. TikTok's web browser steps cover video only.
- A new post keeps the privacy setting of your last post, so a "missing" post may be private.
- A scheduling tool must support TikTok photo posts, and TikTok must have audited its app, or the post stays private.
- TikTok tests some features with a limited group of users, so an option can be missing on one account and present on another.
What Should You Check First?
| Check | What to do | TikTok source (checked on 2026-10-31) |
|---|---|---|
| App version | Update TikTok from your app store, then reopen it | Troubleshooting |
| Photo access | Allow TikTok to access your photos in your phone's settings | Troubleshooting |
| Starting point | Tap Add post, then Photo, then Upload | Making a post |
| Device | Post photos from the phone app, not the web uploader | Making a post |
| Number of photos | Select 35 or fewer | Making a post, and the photo posting API |
| Privacy | Check who can view the post; private posts sit behind the lock icon | Making a post |
| Scheduling tool | Confirm it supports TikTok photo posts and is audited | Posting API, getting started |
| Account | If all of the above fail, the feature may not have reached your account yet | Troubleshooting |
Step 1: Is the TikTok App Up to Date?
TikTok's troubleshooting page asks you to make sure your device runs the latest version of the app, and recommends keeping the phone's operating system up to date too. The help page on making a post repeats the version check in its own troubleshooting list.
App screens change between versions, so an old version can show a different flow from the one in TikTok's current help. Update the app, close it fully, and open it again before you try the next steps. TikTok's two pages also suggest restarting the app and the phone, switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and clearing the app cache under Settings and privacy, then Free up space.
Step 2: Can TikTok See Your Photos?
The troubleshooting page has a section for when you cannot access your device's photos, camera or microphone to post. It asks you to check that the phone has given TikTok permission.
If the Upload screen is empty, or shows only some of your pictures, open your phone's settings, find TikTok, and allow access to all photos. Then reopen TikTok and try again.
Step 3: Did You Start From the Photo Tab?
TikTok's help page gives these steps for a photo post in the app:
- Tap the Add post (+) button at the bottom.
- Tap Photo, then tap Upload to select photos from your device. You can add up to 35.
- Tap Next. Swipe to switch photos and make edits, such as a filter, sound, text, stickers or a crop.
- Tap Next again to edit the cover, write the description, add hashtags and set privacy.
- Tap Post, or tap Drafts to save it.
Step 3 is the quick test. In a photo post, you can swipe from one photo to the next while you edit. If you cannot, you are not in the photo flow, so go back and start again from Photo. TikTok's help does not say what other starting points do with a set of photos, so use the path it documents.
If you add a sound from a business account, the song you wanted may not be there. TikTok's ads help page on the Commercial Music Library says a Business Account sees only sounds from that library. TikTok's Creator Academy guide to photo posts also tells brands to pick a commercially available sound or one they have licensed.
Step 4: Are You Posting From the Phone or the Browser?
The same help page has a separate section for posting from a web browser. Its steps are to click Upload, then Select video to upload or Select file. They describe video, not photos.
So if you made the slides on a computer and uploaded them on tiktok.com, you were working in a flow that TikTok documents for video. Move the images to your phone and post them from the app. The post-from-a-computer guide covers every route from a laptop, including scheduling tools.
Step 5: Did You Select More Than 35 Photos?
TikTok allows up to 35 photos in one post. Both the help page and the photo posting API reference give that number. If you selected more, remove some, or split the set into two posts.
Step 6: Is the Post Private?
TikTok's help page on making a post says a new post keeps the privacy setting of your previous post. If your last post was set to Only you, the next one starts as Only you too.
The same page says only public posts appear under the posts tab on your profile. To find a private post, tap the lock icon on your profile, then change its privacy setting if you meant it to be public.
Step 7: Does Your Scheduling Tool Support Photo Posts?
Scheduling tools post to TikTok through its Content Posting API. That API supports photo posts, but two details catch people out.
First, a tool may not have built the photo option. A tool that posts only videos cannot make a photo post from your slides. Look for "photo post" or "carousel" support for TikTok in the tool's own help pages.
Second, TikTok's getting started page says all content posted by unaudited tools is restricted to private viewing. If your post appears but only you can see it, ask the tool whether its TikTok app has passed that audit.
What If None of These Fixes Work?
You may see more fixes suggested elsewhere, such as switching region, logging out and in, or changing account type. TikTok's help pages did not mention any of these when we checked on 2026-10-31. They may help in a given case, but there is no TikTok source that says why.
What TikTok does say is that it regularly tests features with a limited number of users, and that some new features may not be available to you yet. If the app is current, it can see your photos, and the Photo tab still does not appear, the option may not have reached your account. Report it in the app: TikTok's troubleshooting page says to tap Need more help? at the bottom of the help article and submit a ticket.
How Do You Prepare Slides That Post Cleanly?
Most of the trouble above happens at posting time, but a few choices before that save a second attempt:
- Export every slide at the same size. 1080x1920 (9:16) fills a phone screen.
- Number the files so you can select them in order.
- Keep text away from TikTok's buttons on the right and the caption at the bottom.
- Save the set to your phone's gallery before you open TikTok.
In Wavegrain, the TikTok export downloads a ZIP of 1080x1920 PNG files named slide-1.png, slide-2.png and so on, so the order is already set. Wavegrain can also post a slideshow to TikTok directly, but until TikTok approves Wavegrain's app in its Direct Post audit, a direct post can only be private (Only me), and only to a TikTok account set to private. For a public post, send the slides from Wavegrain to your TikTok inbox and finish the post in the TikTok app, or upload the photos there using the steps above.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is there no photo option on my TikTok?
- Update the app and check that TikTok has access to your photos. TikTok's troubleshooting page asks you to run the latest version and says it tests some features with a limited number of users, so a new option may not reach every account at once.
- Why did my TikTok slideshow turn into a video?
- Check where you started and where you uploaded. TikTok documents photo posts as Add post, then Photo, then Upload in the app, and its web browser steps cover video only. In a photo post you can swipe between photos while you edit; if you cannot, start again from the Photo tab.
- Why can nobody see my TikTok photo post?
- Check its privacy setting. TikTok's help page says a new post keeps the privacy setting of your previous post, and only public posts show under the posts tab. Private posts are behind the lock icon on your profile.
- Can I post a photo slideshow on TikTok from a computer?
- TikTok's help page gives photo steps for the app and video steps for the web browser. To keep a swipeable photo post, post from the phone, or use a tool that posts photos through TikTok's posting API.
- How many photos can a TikTok photo post have?
- Up to 35, according to TikTok's help page on making a post and its posting API documentation.
- Why is my scheduled TikTok photo post private?
- TikTok's developer documentation says content posted by tools that TikTok has not audited is restricted to private viewing. Ask the tool whether its TikTok app has passed that audit.
